A Race Against Time with a Flawed Finish: A Review of "88 Minutes"

2024-02-03

“88 Minutes” throws Al Pacino into a tense race against time as Jack Gramm, a forensic psychologist haunted by his past. The premise is undeniably gripping: on the day a serial killer he condemned faces execution, Jack receives a chilling call – he has 88 minutes to live. As the clock ticks down, Jack scrambles to uncover the truth, protect his loved ones, and stay alive.

Pacino, as always, delivers a powerful performance, injecting Jack with a blend of desperation and defiance. The film effectively taps into his character’s internal struggle, as past demons resurface amidst the present threat. The “real-time” approach, mirroring the 88-minute countdown, adds a layer of urgency and keeps the audience engaged.

However, “88 Minutes” stumbles in its execution. The plot, while initially intriguing, unravels into a convoluted mess of twists and turns, some predictable and others simply nonsensical. The supporting characters feel underdeveloped, existing solely to serve the plot rather than offering depth or emotional resonance. The ending, in particular, leaves viewers with more questions than answers, undermining the built-up tension.

Despite its flaws, “88 Minutes” offers a decent dose of suspense, fueled by Pacino’s charismatic performance and the ticking clock motif. However, viewers seeking a truly satisfying puzzle or a well-rounded narrative might be left wanting more. This film is best enjoyed as a popcorn thriller, savoring the high-stakes moments without overthinking the intricacies of the plot.
