“Return to Oz” is a 1985 fantasy movie directed by Walter Murch, based on the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The film serves as a sequel to the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz,” but it takes a darker and more surreal approach to the story.

The movie follows Dorothy (played by Fairuza Balk), who returns to Oz six months after her first adventure. However, she finds that the land she once knew has been destroyed and taken over by the evil Nome King. Dorothy is aided by new companions, including a talking chicken named Billina and a mechanical man named Tik-Tok, as she sets out to defeat the Nome King and restore Oz to its former glory.

While “Return to Oz” was not as commercially successful as its predecessor, it has since gained a cult following for its unique and imaginative take on the Oz universe. The movie’s visual effects and production design are particularly impressive, with many of the creatures and settings being brought to life through puppetry and practical effects.

One of the strongest aspects of the movie is its cast, which includes several talented actors such as Nicol Williamson, Jean Marsh, and Piper Laurie. Fairuza Balk also gives a strong performance as Dorothy, portraying the character as both brave and vulnerable.

Overall, “Return to Oz” is a well-crafted and visually stunning movie that offers a darker take on the Oz universe. While it may not be for everyone, fans of the original books or those looking for a unique and imaginative fantasy film are likely to enjoy it.
