Second Chances and Strikeouts: A Review of Sweet Dreams (2024)

2024-04-22

“Sweet Dreams” swings for the fences with its comedic take on addiction recovery, but not all its pitches hit. The story follows Morris, a down-on-his-luck addict who lands in the wacky world of “Sweet Dreams” sober living. Surrounded by a motley crew of fellow recovering housemates, Morris is forced to coach their softball team in exchange for staying put. This unlikely team becomes the unlikely key to Morris’s redemption.

The film’s strength lies in its humor. The misfit team dynamic, fueled by the always-reliable Bobby Lee and the surprising comedic chops of Kate Upton, provides plenty of laughs. There are moments of genuine heartwarming camaraderie too, as the characters support each other on and off the field.

However, “Sweet Dreams” struggles to balance its comedic tone with the serious themes of addiction. The film occasionally feels like it’s taking shortcuts with the recovery process for the sake of a gag. This can leave viewers feeling unsure of the film’s message.

Despite its tonal stumbles, “Sweet Dreams” has a certain charm. The cast is clearly having fun, and that energy is infectious. If you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy with a touch of heart, “Sweet Dreams” might just hit a home run.
